German made bass circa 1950. $5,500

This is a lovely round back spruce and maple bass likely made in Bubenreuth, Germany which became the center for commercial violin making in postwar Germany. The label says (in German) that was made for Weisshaar and Sons. Because Weisshaar moved to Costa Mesa, California in 1947 and may have used his supply of German language labels for a while afterwards, and because of the hardware and style of construction the year of circa 1950 is a pretty good guess. The bass has a string length of 41.5”, a “d” neck, and very comfortable dimensions with a 25-1’2 wide lower bout, a 19-1/2” upper bout and a  body length of 43- 7/8”. The bass had some good repair work done at some point to address some cracks, likely at the Weisshaar shop. Condition right now is excellent except for some edge wear on the treble side lower bout edge, which is a typical, restorable maintenance spot. New pro set up including Evah Pirazzi EA, Bel Canto D G strings. New bridge.
