Saxon or Bohemian bass circa 1900
$3650

A consignment from a client who inherited the bass from a family member. It plays well and all the cracks seem to be well closed. Having had a look on the inside, some of the interior repairs were not done the way we would now. In addition,  the fit of the ribs to the top and back near the lower bouts needs attention as the margin of overhang is small as often happens to these older basses when the back and top shrink in width with the ribset staying the same size. The solution to this problem is to have a luthier do a shortening of the ribs at the lower block in order to 'tuck' the width of the ribs in and reestablish a good margin of overhang. This is about a $2000 job that the owner cannot take on right now, therefore, we have lowered the price far below its eventual restored value.  I want to emphasize that the bass is fully playable and sounds and plays great at this time, but will need this work in the future as well as other related crack reinforcement that should be done at the same time when the bass is open as this is the 'golden opportunity' to address the earlier repairs in a way that will assure that the bass remains healthy in the future.

41.5" string length, D neck. With bridge and soundpost moved to just in front of diapason, and a lowered nut location, along with adjustments to fingerboard  in add and bridge, the bass is quite playable.  These basses have a reputation for sounding great, and this one is not an exception.
