One neat thing about Shen is they are constantly experimenting with graduations and materials, and I’ve had a number of basses like this one from them, never listed in their catalog. In this case I’m very happy with what they call their “classic”  model that  they’ve been making variations of for at least 25 years. 

You can look at the description on the website ( https://cscproducts.com/products/bass-shen-classic-maple.html) for a maple back and sides version of this bass but this one is all willow including the curvaceous round back. I’ve had a number of larger carved back willow basses from Shen but never seen the smaller model from them.  To me it has a nice punchy sound, but with a roundness that their maple basses often lack. In short one of a kind and a tonal winner, especially under the bow, but would also make a good jazz bass. 

41-1/2” string length, D neck. Currently has Pirastro Evah Pirazzi  light gauge strings.
