Shen Panormo model 800, 2011 , $8000
This high end bass from Sam Shen had a back seam issue, a common problem with flat back basses. Because of this we decided to solve any further possible flat back problems once and for all and use Matthew Tucker’s “responsive bracing for double bass” system. To understand more about this system please visit https://www.bresquebasses.com.au/tucker-bracing
The bass is a wide model with a 3/4 size string length (41-1/2”. “D“ heel stop) and a very playable overstand and appropriately taller, wider, bridge height with a well shaped and easy playing fingerboard and workable string heights, so it doesn’t feel nearly as intimidating as many large orchestral basses. If you have considered a large model bass for a thick, wide, but projecting and well balanced arco and pizzicato timbre, this one will be a candidate you should try. We’re hoping to add a fully chromatic C extension soon.
In addition to the back seam repair, re-bracing of the back, a new bottom block, and a conservative re-voicing of the bass bar, a removable "top gasket", which makes later repair work much easier and less expensive, and a full set up was done on the bass.
