Jaques Gangon circa 1985. $3,900
Jaques Gagnon is a French luthier from Montreal who lives in the Philippines and often made basses out a wood called Calantus, like this one with its full carved top and round back. This viol shaped original model by Gagnon has a big dark pizzicato sound and sounds quite smooth and dark under the bow despite the present setup with the fairly bright sounding Thomastik Spirocore strings. The bass has been gone through very recently and it’s easy to play and responsive with an excellent quality fingerboard and bridge. The model is slightly generous with its 26-12” wide lower bout and somewhat deep ribs, but the upper bout is shaped to allow great access to the upper fingerboard. The string length is 41-1/4” and it has a “d” heel stop. Gagnon manufactured his own low gear ratio and very smooth tuning machines and the endpin is also of high quality.
