Original 1954  bass that just received a new neck retaining the original scroll (scroll graft.) American Standards are great sounding American made laminated basses that are highly regarded by Bluegrass and Jazz bassists. 

 

As this one had a damaged neck, I  used this opportunity to make some useful modifications. I reduced the string length a little from over 43” to 42” making it considerably easier to play while keeping the long powerful pizzicato sustain these basses are known for. More playability improvements include a round (rather than beveled) fingerboard of high quality ebony, a carbon fiber neck inlay to insure long term stability, and a bridge fingerboard curve combination that facilitates playing with a bow more easily. Many original American Standard necks were very narrow at the nut, often as narrow as 36 mm, this new neck is a normal width at 4I mm.  The heel stop is a D on the g string. 

 

In addition, the neck joint has been modified to a detachable design secured with a single recessed bolt, so that the neck can be removed for much simpler and less expensive air travel when stored in a case designed to hold a removable neck bass (see photos and description of the one I have available.)

 

The double  pivoting end soundpost is my own design and works particularly well on a removable neck bass because the lower end with its receiving socket is lightly fixed to the back of the bass allowing the pivoting upper end of the soundpost a perfect friction fit enhanced by a micro abrasive surface (600 grit sandpaper) and in my experience they simply stay put no matter how the bass is handled, but are still removable with standard soundpost tools. 

 

This bass is available with a new hardshell case (sometimes called the Concord) designed for a removable neck bass. The case is $2,000, but if the bass and case are purchased at the same time  the total of the two $6,300.   Great wheels and hardware on the case, very durable and easy to handle and fits the bass well.
